RE: Adding another Solar Panel

If it's the panel from Lance it's a Kyocera... at least it is on my '07 1181. I've got a second 130 watt panel to install. It will fit right opposite the 80 panel on the other side of the hatch. I believe the open circuit voltage is 17.8. You're also going to want to replace the cheap solar controller Lance installed with a real MPPT controller like a BlueSky 2000e.

RE: New England ice storm

I was very lucky. We are just a few miles south and east of the ice line. It really is a line. It's like two completely different worlds. I was on Route 495 yesterday morning (our major N/S highway) and must have seen well in excess of 100 bucket trucks from all different utilities heading in both directions.

RE: anyone tow like this?

issues (besides legality): What do you mean issues besides legality? :h Wouldn't the fact that it's not legal be the most important issue... and nullify any of the others?

RE: i need help with 12 volt frying pan and the amp hours

Why do you need a 12v frying pan? Don't you have a stove and/or grill to cook on? 12V anything that involves heat doesn't work well... blow dryers, curling irons, heaters, cooking items (pots, pans, etc.) Not to mention, they are battery killers. Stick to propane or 120V AC for making things hot. I will add one caveat though. I do have a 12V heated mattress pad and it actually does work. It won't make bacon and eggs but it does make the GF happy.

RE: If replacing your truck would you buy a diesel again?

If replacing your truck would you buy a diesel again? Absolutely without question. If you have to try and apply some sort of cost justification to it you probably aren't a candidate for a diesel truck. You buy a diesel because you either want it, need it or both. It has NOTHING to do with cost savings.

RE: Lance Kool-aid drinkers need not enter

I have to agree that quality is not Lance's strong suit these days. I have many of the same fitment and construction issues. It's obvious that a lot of unskilled labor is used in the construction process. I've probably spent upwards of 30 hours repairing, undoing and cleaning up issues on my camper. While not happy about it, it was better than the alternative of taking it to a dealer. Most of these issues would probably fall into the "nitpick" list as are many of your punch list items. Are these things acceptable in a quality product? No way. But it is what it is and I just deal with it. It's a better option than getting stressed out and fighting a no win battle. I figure it's faster and easier to just fix things than compile detailed, numbered, itemized, and photographed lists to publish on the internet and then spend great amounts of time documenting, explaining, defending and debating them. How many hours have you expending doing that with no return? I sent Lance a list titled "What was Lance Thinking?" comprised of things about my camper that made no sense from a usability or engineering standpoint. I believe they actually did incorporate some of the suggested changes. Not sure if it's because I pointed them out or they had figured it out on their own. The problem that most affected our use of the camper was the bad winterization valve on the water system. It exhibited the exact same symptoms as your issue. Once discovered, it was an easy fix but sure frustrated me for while. Even with all these issues, I still love this damn camper. We've gone so many new places and met great people through having it. I know, we could have done the same thing with a different brand camper. But, I truly believe they are all equally deficient in build quality. From the campers that I looked at, and I looked at a lot of them, the worst overall fit and finish was Host. Lots of raw unfinished wood edges and missing trim throughout. So for better or worse, I choose to accept the role of chief camper mechanic and just move forward. I know that's not an option for everyone.

RE: Eastern Mass. to Big Rapids Mich.!!!

I've made that drive both ways... over the lakes and under the lakes. It turned out that the over the lake part into Canada (going out) was in snow and ice the entire two days... not fun. A coincidence I realize and not necessarily a function of going through Canada. Unless you REALLY want to see Niagra Falls, I highly suggest you take the under the lakes route. It is slightly longer mileage wise but will take far less time without the multiple border crossings. Especially with the camper if the border agents decide to "toss" it for whatever reason. You could be there for hours! Take your preferred route to I-80 W in PA and... head West young man, you'll end up in MI eventually. Seriously, trust me on this one.

RE: What size A/C unit should I get?

Go with the 13.5 Coleman Mach III PS. Gives you benefit of having a more powerful A/C when you need it while using less power than a 11 btu unit. Runs great on the Honda 2000. I agree. And it can be fully controlled (off/on, fan and temp) from the digital wall thermostat. I'm not aware of that ability with the Polar Cub unless it can be added?

RE: Lance 992 water supply issues

I don't have the same camper but I've never had a pressure or surging issue with the water in my 1181. I believe I have the same pump as you and probably "similar" plumbing. I did have a couple of issues. One was the construction debris you mention. I've cleaned all the faucet screens twice and the screen on the water pump about four times. I think I've gotten most of the plastic shaving and other crud out of the system. The biggest problem I had was with the winterization valve. When camping and the water pump was on, it would start pumping and would not shut off. The only way to re-pressurize the system was to turn on a faucet for 10-30 seconds. Not very efficient for water usage and a real PITA if I forgot to shut the pump off before bed and the pump started hammering in the middle of the night. Someone here posted that Lance had a bad batch of winterization valves that leak (let air into the system). I can't remember who it was to credit them with the find. I ripped the valve out and it's never misbehaved since. Not that any of this helps you but I thought I'd share in the event it might be useful to someone.

RE: Valve Stem Extensions for 2008 F450

Do NOT use any kind of a valve stem extension because they WILL leak eventually. Trust me... I speak from experience. After two flat inner duals I got disgusted and dropped the $100 or so bucks for real valve stems. Call Borg Tire Supply and tell them what you are trying to do. You'll need to know exactly what kind of wheels you have. I forget the guys name that I worked with but he put together a set for me and mailed them out. They are stainless steel and heavy duty.

RE: Truth be told

Just how does - not using the water heater, conserve water? I think he's saying you take a MUCH shorter shower when it's cold! I know I would... not that I'd ever consider a cold shower. I just can't see not firing up the water heater. It doesn't use much propane. Having hot water is one of the great advantages of a self contained camper.

RE: wheels on corner jacks

We've discussed what a bad idea this is at length in the past. To date, I don't think anyone has been foolish enough to try it. But I want pictures of the aftermath if they do.

RE: Jim Allen @ Lance Camper

Are you completely sure you are installing the cushions correctly to make the "bed"? I can't see your entire dinette area in the picture but it seems like it might work if you took the two cushions in the upper part of the picture and turned them 90 degrees (sideways). Then leave the one in the lower part of the picture oriented like it is. If you're trying to use a fourth cushion, either take it out or leave it standing straight up on one end (like a headboard) if there is a small gap there. In my old '04 1030 there was a diagram in the closet of how the cushions were supposed to go. It was like a puzzle since they were all different shapes and sizes. If properly configured they fit fine.

RE: Between full use and winterization - how to handle it

After a lot of discusson between the two of us and talking to two fireman friends who also camp, we went to Lowe's and got an oil filled radiant electric heater. Good choice... IMHO. :)
